Julo-Claudian aquilifer
#1
My aquilifer (54mm) is finally finished, but somehow the photos failed miserably. Cataline's trick with the scanner inspired me, so here he is. Seems as though it is distorted lengthwise a bit.
very nice Jasper. I tried a very similar shield design. The result was an acetone bath. I see your aquilifer has his gladius on the left, did they have a choice of sides. My memory suggests so
Unless the Persians fly away like birds, hide in the earth like mice, or leap into a lake like frogs, they will never see their homes again, but will die under our arrows

In the name of heaven Catiline, how long do you propose to exploit our patience..

For that shield I used a trick that might be a bit difficult with smaller figures. The design is based on the photo of a Legio XX parma, which was resized and printed. I then sanded the paper down to the thinnest size possible and stuck that on the shield. It then becomes simply a question of blocking it in.
You can now get decal film that works in ink-jet printers, making the whole process much easier. Bare-Metal sells it in North America: www-bare-metal.com.
Salve,
...and in my eagerness to help, I forgot to say what an excellent job that is. You must have young eyes!
Salve,
Thank you! I'll have a look at that company. Trouble is though that nearly all those shields are different sizes.
Oh, and yes, my eyes are relatively young!
Greets
A-ha, I see you've betrayed your allegiance to the White Tunic Faction!
Oh, wait a tick. That remark about shield sizes makes no sense. That stuff you mention can be used to make any shield I like. Leaves only the resolution problem and shiny surface of decal material to deal with. I'll probably keep trying my hand at it. It feels as quite an accomplishment if and when I succeed at painting a shield.
As to tunic colour (though I know I really shouldn't go into that) I liked white better for purely esthetic reasons. There's already plenty of red/redbrown in the figure with the pelt and all that leather.
You can kill the shine of a decal with a misted coat of clear flat - helps seal the decal, too. If you don't use an airbrush, artist supply stores sell several canned varieties. But if you are good enough with a brush not to use an airbrush, you are good enough to brush on the clear flat. If you are not familiar with the technique, clear flats are easier to apply as several thinned coats, especially when brush applied.

On the offhand chance that you are a figure modeler unfamiliar with the particulars of decals, I mention that decals are best applied over a glossy surface.

Please pardon me if I'm carrying coals to Novuscastra, but I've been in scale modeling off and on for over forty years, and I've learned that modelers of different genre's speak only vaguely related languages, and frequently have astonishingly different knowledge bases and skill sets. Besides, someone new to the hobby, as you are obviously not, may read this and learn something.
Salve,
It seems in this case the language is the same! I'll see what to do when the next shield comes along.
Greets
