Circus Maximus
#1
Hi there, I was just wondering if anybody has heard of a board game by Avalon Hill (formally owned by Hasbro and now Wizards of the Coast) that's out of print right now?

I'm currenly playing in an online campaign of it ( Chariot races take place in Calgary, Alberta, Canada - but online wagering and discussion takes place there ), and was curious to see if there were other people that played it?

I'm also looking for a new board to host it ( providing a forum basically) as it's currently placed in a StarCraft & Robotech board (not quite the best for atmosphere you know E EM ).
Yup, I've heard of Circus Maximus, supposed to be pretty fun but I've never personally seen it. You can occasionally get a copy on eBay.com.

If you want to host the Games here, you can start a thread and we'll be happy to host; it'll boost the Gaming Forum and probably introduce some folks to more historical aspects of Rome.

If you want to chat about it offline, just email me: [email protected]

It's quite a fun little game, and though I and some of my friends have played it alot, we've never tried a campaign of this sort before. Right now it's more of a test campaign that's going well. We have 4 charioteers and 2 wagerers as well. It has another month to run it's course and then we'll have our second campaign with 8-12 charioteers, and hopefully more interest.

Oh, and btw if anybody needs a copy of the game, I have 6 extra (we'll 5, I want to keep 2 myself).

JRSCline I'll email you more on Monday about the hosting.

-Cheers, Jonathan.

I'd like to see exactly how one plays a board game over the internet. This should be interesting.
Rules For Posting

Me too! This will be a great experiment for RAT, but JG has obviously been doing this before with success, so I think it'll be fine.
JG, all your wishes are granted... <poof!> E EM

I do ask you review the Rules for Posting in the Round Table area, and keep those players on a tight leash where flames and profanity are concerned. I don't know if that was ever a problem before for your old Circus Maximus games, but we really want to keep things friendly in RAT.

Good luck and let the Games begin!
Well there are actually two seperate ways to go about it.

The first is from the campaign version of Circvs Maximvs itself, though expanded. In this version there are two sets of players, those that race, and those that spectate, both are allowed and encouraged to wager on the races. The winner (as with any Circvs Maximvs campaign) is to come away with the most coin.

Although the spectaters can't win any purse money (for the chariots that finish in the top three only), they don't have to worry about replacing body parts, chariots, or horses either.

The second way I've tried before, but haven't commited to the online PBEM version as of yet, it's simply not streamlined enough as it is, but I'm working on it with others. This version would allow all players to race, but so far it's overly cumbersome.
Hey thanks Jenny!

It has been doing well in the past, though only time will tell exactly how well it can turn out.
Not to worry, you don't think I'd allow a Roman Charioteer loose in a peaceful city without a leash do you?

-Cheers, Jonathan.
