Sword or Dagger on Slinger

What do you folks think the slinger on Trajan's column is wearing? Sword or Dagger...

It Looks like a dagger or utility knife to me. Not long enough to be a sword.

If you've ever tried slinging, then you'll know that a something as long as a sword swinging around on the same side as your throwing arm can sometimes be a hinderence.
