Legio Tricesima cohors tres site is now up
#1
I've decided to create a vexillation of legio XXX here in the midwest. Though still under construction, I've gone ahead and setup a web page for the 3rd cohort of legio XXX:

Legio Tricesima Ulpia Victrix, cohors tertia

I've uploaded a bunch of pctures from past events. Not attempting to redo any of the other fine roman sites out there, but I intend to include pages on roman religion as it relates to military affairs, another on roman surveying methods, and some HOW-TO's based upon my own personal experiance on making roman stuff. The first of these HOW-TOs will be on making caligae.

looks like a good start. One tip, lose the autoplay fanfare. Once is nice, repeatedly as you return to the homepage to click a new link is tiresome.

Lee, you seem to have a certain affinity for the Off Topic forum. Unless you object I'm moving this to Reenactment and Reconstruction....

I wasn't sure which category would be most appropriate.

I've added my first HOW-TO, a desription of what I've learned about the construction of caligae, and I've added links to the construction material on the main legio XXX site.

Go to:

and click on the "In Campo Martis" link and then on the "Making Authentic Caligae" link.

I'll keep you in mind.

Over the weekend I've made a few more updates to the site:

1. I added a bit more latin. As roman reenactors we all need to be using the lingua latina more.
2. I added a page on making and wearing the roman toga. Click on the Vestitus Romani link.
3. I also added a little bit of Java Script to make an event calendar. the only events there right now are in June, but unforunately June may be a bad month for me as it appears that is when I will be moving my family.
4. In Religio Romana I added a link to the Dura Europos site so that people that do not have the Simon James book may see the fresco of Julius Terentius and the Cohors Vicesima Palmyrenorum.
5. I'm getting up to speed using QCAD. As soon as I get the QCAD 2, the last free version 1.5.1 is very broken, I intend to create CAD drawings of roman surveying instruments, the plumb-bob, groma, and libra.

Lee, just a suggestion, but under each of your latin links, you may want to put the english translation. A person may not speak latin, or want to... So as they're going through your home page, they may not even bother clicking on a link that they have no idea what it is.

Not all of us share your idea about the usage of latin. 8)

Careful Magnus, I've already stepped on that Latin landmine Confusedhock:

I've added English translations to the buttons of the main page. Some latin though I am going to leave untranslated. I feel the need to challenge the reader.

Cavete minas latinas terrae!

What is the music you have playing on the background from? Where did you get it?

Unfortunately, I long ago lost the link to the site. The main instrument is suppose to be a cornu, so it should be sounding roman.

I've added a page on the groma:
[url:1slw1w4m]http://www.geocities.com/legio_tricesima_cohors_tres/agrimensorum/groma/Groma.html[/url]

Click on the CAD drawings for a larger view and if you're using IE, click on the icon on the lower right corner to be able to see all of the lines.

Good stuff Lee, Any chance that the CAD drawings could have a background other than black? It's hard to read!
(especially for us old-timers!) :?

Best regards,

I first did black lines on white and I thought that hard to see. The reverse seemed to be better to me. I started out using the last free version of QCAD, 1.5.1, and then switched over to QCAD 2.1. I'm still learning how to use it. Maybe it would help to adjust the line thicknesses.
