From what I can tell, that "Spartan" helmet of Deepeeka's is worn like a regular Corinthian, over the face. It just LOOKS like an Etrusco-Corinthian, sort of! I think the middle fellow in this photo is wearing one:
http://www.larp.com/hoplite/parade19.jpg Those are George Marcinek and his guys in New York--I think he has at least one of every Greek helmet on the market! He makes all the crests himself. The Corinthian on the right is probably the other Deepeeka one. I don't know if it would be possible to modify the Deepeeka "Spartan" into a convincing Etrusco-Corinthian. Oh, by the way, I've been talking to Gagan from Deepeeka about a number of things, and will be sending him a big pack of information soon. I did mention the odd names they have for some items, so it's possible they'll clean those up. Khairete, Matthew

Tried Fotogalerie 3 times. Nothing. Excellent article on crest construction, though, congratulations!

It's odd-looking because the eyeholes are small and close together, as in Italo-Corinthian helmets, while the shape of the bowl is clearly designed for it to be worn as a true Corinthian. Andy Cropper's got one, and it's really quite good, but not for Punic Wars. I can't see the sense in Italo-Corinthians. I think they represent the nadir of Roman style.

Quote:...into a convincing Etrusco-Corinthian.As long as you're mentioning the odd names, Matt... I prefer the term "Apulo-Corinthian" for two reasons. First, the terms "Etrusco-Corinthian" and "Italo-Corinthian" are used by archaeologists to describe ceramics, which is not the case with "Apulo-Corinthian." Second, according to Michael Burns's article "The Homogenisation of Military Equipment Under the Roman Republic" (available as a .pdf), 24 of the 36 helmets of this type with known provenance come from Apulia (modern Puglia) and there is reason to believe it originate there. In fact, have a look at the map on page 80 of that article, you'll see that there are only four examples from places under Etruscan control at any point, and those are definitively Etruscan. There's just nothing particularly Etruscan about this type of helmet, so why call it Etrusco-Corinthian? One of my pet subjects... now I just need a smiley wearing an ApCor... Quote:Tib. I think they're pretty neat... who doesn't want to look like your favorite god or hero like on the expensive Greek import vases?

I am curious...
Kallimachos, Your avitar shows you wearing what looks like a Deeepeeka "Chalcidian" (although I dont know if thats what they call it, off the top of my head). Can you comment on the quality and SIZE of this helmet? Since I am thinking of getting one. Thanks Gaius Deciius Aquilius LYKAON (Ralph Izard)

Hi Gaius,
I recommed the Chalkidean helmet very much. The quality is very fine but it will come without crest (I made it myself). Diameter is nearly 26 cm, it fits on a man's head. If it's to big you can make yourself an inlay. Hope this helps.

Kallimachos,
Thanks for the great pics, and your crest work looks excellent. By 26cm diameter, do you mean the front-to-rear? Or is the helmet circular? Which it does not look so from your pics. If it is 26cm. front-to-rear, this would be about the same demention of the the Aux B, the Italic G, and the Gallic C, which I just measured from my own collection. Thanks, LYKAON (Ralph Izard)

Sorry, I meant front-to-rear and thanks for your compliment.
