I'd like to be the equivalent of a Sergeant Major...maybe Centurion...in Leg XIIII Gemina...

If that's OK...

Hi Tom,
Officially, fixed ranks are only possible as of Primus Pilus, but I might be willing to bend the rules.

No biggie, Jasper. You've known me long enough...five, sixe years?...to know that rank and all that doesn't mean much to me in a forum like this. When the time comes, I'll bring it up again.

Or not.

All true Tom, but in your case, if we counted Marius(1), Casca & your current account together, your post count would surely be enough.

Jasper,

Rather than a rank, could I have the words on the memorial of the real Caballo- " Batavi Filio M. Ulpius Senecio"?

"Reference: CIL 03, 04890 (p 1813) = ILLPRON 00401
Province: Noricum Find Site: Rosendorf / Virunum

Caballo / Batavi f(ilio) / M(arcus) Ulpius / Senecio / fratri

This soldiers (partial) inscription was found in Austria near to the border of Hungary. It states that Caballo was a Batavian, son of Marcus Ulpius Senecio it mentions brothers too. His father was probably made a Roman citizen during the reign of Trajan, hence the Marcus Ulpius."

Your guess is almost certainly better than mine in guessing the rest of the stone!

Cheers,

Caballo

Quote:Caballo / Batavi f(ilio) / M(arcus) Ulpius / Senecio / fratri
"Marcus Ulpius Senecio [set this monument up] to his brother/comrade, Caballus the son of Batavus."

or just possibly
"M. Ulpius [set this monument up] to his brother/comrade, Caballus Senecius the son of Batavus."

I'd say that 1 is way more likely than the unusual 2. Be happy to change that for you Paul, but do you really want your title to be an epitaph?
Greets!
