Rather than a rank, could I have the words on the memorial of the real Caballo- " Batavi Filio M. Ulpius Senecio"? "Reference: CIL 03, 04890 (p 1813) = ILLPRON 00401 Province: Noricum Find Site: Rosendorf / Virunum Caballo / Batavi f(ilio) / M(arcus) Ulpius / Senecio / fratri This soldiers (partial) inscription was found in Austria near to the border of Hungary. It states that Caballo was a Batavian, son of Marcus Ulpius Senecio it mentions brothers too. His father was probably made a Roman citizen during the reign of Trajan, hence the Marcus Ulpius." Your guess is almost certainly better than mine in guessing the rest of the stone! Cheers, Caballo

I'd say that 1 is way more likely than the unusual 2. Be happy to change that for you Paul, but do you really want your title to be an epitaph?
