My Favourite Film Music!
#1
Ave!

One of my favourite film scores is John Barry's Oscar winning music for "The Lion In Winter".

Although the film isn't one of my all time favourites the music is.

Such variety and moods from sweeping choruses to Gregorian chanting.

Dramic chord and rhythm changes, blaring trumpets one moment, sweet voices singing in counter point the next.

This is one of mine, do you have a favourite movie sound track?

Hello Jim

Correct, anything by John Barry is brilliant even if the film itself is not up to scratch. In that category you can put 'King Kong' (1976) and 'Raise the Titanic'! The first piece of film music I remember liking was the capsule in space sequence in 'You Only Live Twice'. Years later of course I found out it was written by John Barry as well as most of the best James Bond scores.

Otherwise it depends on what I am working on at the time. Hans Zimmer's 'Gladiator' and 'King Arthur' are usually on when I am working on Roman pics as well as 'Ben-Hur' but 'The Blue Max' by Jerry Goldsmith was on when I was painting figures for Osprey's 'German Air Forces 1914-18'.

For a change of pace I also like Mario Nascimbene who wrote the scores for 'Barabbas', 'Alexander the Great' (1953) and of course 'The Vikings' and Bernard Hermann who wrote the score for 'Jason and the Argonauts', Mysterious Island and Hitchcock thrillers like 'Psycho' and 'Vertigo'.

Greetings,
at the moment I really love Vangelis's soundtrack from Alexander....particularly the Drums of Gaugamela and Titans singing out the war cry (which I have just had to put on quietly  ) and found that dusting while listening to Bagoas Dance results in dust everywhere as i have to shake my feather duster and boogie...lol
also Hans Zimmerman's King Arthur soundtrack......
and Kingdom of Heaven - Harry Gregson Williams...

Hello everybody,

my favorite musics are mostly from those 'ancient' films, of course too.

- very exciting 'Spartacus' when the legions walk down the hill for the final battle against Kirk Douglas and his guys.

- 'Alexander' by Stone, again the music is best IMHO when there is being prepared for battle and Alexanders rides to the right wing of his troops, but also the dance scenes of Bagoas and Roxanne are supported by very fine music

- 'Ben Hur', 'Gladiator' - nearly all sequences

- 'Massada' - especially the scene when the Legio X parades underneath the rock and some cavalry trumpeters announce the Romans to the besieged Jews (with lituus'es, BTW !!!)

Graham (Sumner),

it is astonishing what similar behaviour and preferences many from us at this forum have, I also like 'working' more, when I hear this kind of music or even have a Video and/or DVD in the background.

Now that we are safely cast into outer darkness (cue wailing and gnashing of teeth  ), would anyone care to suggest some good music to use in our First International Ancient Greek Festival? Have you heard Mausoleum at Halicarnassos?

Basil Poulidoris' Conan the Barbarian, specially The Battle, The Atlantean Sword, The Orgy and Civilization themes.

Progeny from Hans Zimmer's Gladiator is specially orgasmic too.

LOTR as well, the Rohan theme... WOW!

A couple of years ago, I saw "Intolerance", the classic movie by D.W. Griffith ([url:2kd90lhg]http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0006864/[/url]). In 1916, movies had no soundtrack; a life orchestra was playing the music. When I saw the movie, they had done the same: an entire symphony orchestra, conducted by Carl Davis, was sitting in front of the silver screen. It was the first and last time that I was really impressed by an orchestral score.
