Massive gathering in Germania in 2009

Quote:I already have a lot of orders on 1th century gear for that 2009 event..... Already know of a merovingian group buying totally new equipment for that event.

What event? Or in anticipation of an event?

Hello,

as far as I can say there will be some kind of event just because a lot of guys are going to be there.
From the "barbaric"-reenactment point of view there is very little central organization at the moment.Perhaps because it is still a few years to wait.
At www.lwl.org/2000jahrevarusschlacht are a few informations .There is a link to www.landesverband-lippe.de that they made the contracts on that. But this is mainly on the roman part.Well, I think we need more organisation.....hmmm....

OK, that would mean that there isn't a whole lot to choose as to the place of the event.

Sure, you can say 'of course it has to be Kalkriese', but remember that this is just a big field, whereas when we resally would have 20+ groups coming, there might be room to do a really big thing, like a march from the east over (say) 10 km to the field at Kalkriese.

Also, this would mean that the event will not be suitable for anything other than 1st-groups.. Cry

At http://www.landesverband-lippe.de/index.php?id=299 they're discussing a triple exhibition, but also the launch of (another?) reconstruction of a Roman ship!!

Is this a reenactment event, or just a gethering for Romans Only? Sounds like y'all need some Germans and even invite the Celts for a good show.

Cause theres still no "comitee" builded, no one can say if it will be limited or not.
Right now i ve no time to do some organization, but i hope this will change soon, so some more and me can start to do some planings.

For me, theres no problem in a multiperiod event, which also will see "the enemies and friends" of the empire, as long as it will be presented good and sensefull, which mean, not a mass of reenactors who cant be devided or all toghether on the "stage".

The Idea is very interesting but it will be plenty of work organisating this event. I am near the region where this probably will take place (Kalkriese is only 50 km away). I will help in any possible way if wanted.

We are a french association. His name is Limitis. We study people living near the roman limes.

Actualy, we are working about German people between first and second century.
Our site is:

We can found articles (in french) about Germans, Africans, Romans and photos about us.

Articles:

-L'équipement militaire des auxiliaires africains dans l'armée romaine.
-Les auxiliaires africains dans l'armée romaine.

At the risk of suggesting an anathema, couldn't we ask Celtic groups to possibly add to these numbers?

One could maybe ask also early "vik"s to enlist with slightly modified gear to come an join the "barbarian" ranks. If they stick to seaxes and axes and spears and leave their swords, and go helmetless or borrow celtic or roman helmets.

Just a thought, I realise it could go too anacronistic but if the Barbarians seem to be in too few a numbers.

Then all auxillae would have to go over on the germanic tribes side too. forgive me if I´m wrong but where Arminius not commander of the Aux.?

IIRC: He certainly was (commanded the Cheruscans?) and became a citizen gaining equestrian rank, and his brother who stayed loyal to Rome and went to Germany serving under Germanicus in the post-Kalkriese conflict. They apparently swapped insults during discussion under a flag of truce.

Thanx man! Well I remember that from I Cladius or if it was Cladius the God. But I didn´t know that was "historicly correct", I thaought it was fiction from RG. Not to hijack the tread but it makes me wonder how different the forces where in equipment and looks. I think I will start a new tread on that.

I dont think we should "take what we get to fill the ranks", to say it with other words.
There should be a standart in equipments quality if we want to cooperate with the museums and europe. If there will be to rare "enemies" we will have to get other solutions.
Also it is the year of the 4 emperor and the Batavians, so civil wars between mid 1st century reenacters will also be a solution Smile

Martin, do a different theme to that or take a look in the search machine of this forum under "Arminius".
We already dont know exactly how the cheruscians under Arminius looked, perhaps they were integrated as auxiliaries already, but perhaps they still had their own equipment or somewhat between. We cant say anything about that, also Arminius and his men were veterans of other fights already.

I've been following the posts here periodically and maybe we are being a little too skeptical. If the event in Aalen this past week-end can pull that many people from all over Europe I don't see why this can't be a true Roman occasion like we'd all like to see.
If I were trying to put it together I'd contact the major (as in famous) groups from the EU. Germany,France, Italy, Great Britain, etc. Some are RAT members and many read posts here. Those groups no doubt have contacts, too. If we show a real interest in making it happen I believe it will. Some of those guys have influence, too. I would think it not too hard to convince the powers that be for a legitimate historical event on a grand scale.
What if Dan Peterson's dream of seeing Legions in the field were to become a reality? We could all be proud.

Call me naive, but I believe "If you build it,they will come".
