Music of Ancient Rome and Greece
#29
Salvete omnes!

Tobias said I had to post here during a lot of discussion about that theme...

it is really tricky and there is a lot of misunderstanding and misinformationen (people are only writing what they raed in other people´s books without knowing, if its rights...same with CDs sadly).

1.) Ok, Dr.SHagels recontructions of the Homers singing are basically right,
I know him personally and raed all the stuff he wrote about it.

2.) NEVER any form of a double-flute existed, they were all pipes!
So you might choose how authetic tsome groups are...their CDs have several other misleadings. Also I must agree its creative and wired and nice to listen to...but do not take it too serious.
Furthermore I find the music boring, sounds all the same and the players are not very creative with tunes and rhythms.
Exept Mr.Marshall, he was a crack of a piper!
And I love Daemonia Nymphe!

3.) The Delphi-Paian sounds like monks because we know that it was sung by the Tecnitoi (Athenian civilists chorus) of 39 men, it owns a straight 5/8 rhytmn and was accompained by kithara and aulos. The tuning is ancient and it doesen´t hit a modern ear, cause ancient tonality was not Dur and Moll rather than well-temperated-tuned...

4.) The Michigan sounds jazzy, cause the ancient tonalities are close to the modern Jazz-scales. Also the Aulos was the father of the hobo, the clarinet, the schalmei and the bagpipe.
Rebuilded Auloi sound sometimes more like bagpipes, sometimes more like a duduk (played in Armenia). We have aroung 80 archaeological founds of Auloi, all pipes, no flutes and if you recreate them you come to very complicate instruments, tricky to play. Sadly most CDs simply are played with modern nothern-african or italian folk-music-instruments.

5.) Beside knowing about 65 musical pieces of antiquity, dating from 3th BC to 5th AD, we have a lot of theoretical lecture about scales, rhythm, tonality, instruments etc.

So if you have some more questions feel free to post, I really like to answer them the best I can ;-) )

Nice forum and poeple I must say after reading a lot of postings here.

Have a nice day,
Sincerly
Susanna
