Hi,
I though you might be interested:
in 1931 archeologists excavated the remains of a hydraulis (organ) in Budapest/Aquincum.
Several reconstructions were made and the debate whether it was "powered" by air or water is still continuing.
The hydraulis originates from 228 AD. The date is exact, because there were a bronze plate attached to the front side of the organ whith the following text:
G(aius) Jul(ius) Viatorinus dec(urio) col(oniae) Aq(uinci) aedilicius praef(ectus) coll(egii) cent(onariorum) hydram coll(egio) s(upra) s(cripto) de suo d(onum) d(edit) Modesto et Probo co(n)s(ulibus).
Here are some pics of the original finds and one of the reconstructions:

and whats more interesting, here is a sound sample of it:

Did yo know that "Stairway to Heaven" of Led Zeppelin is all written in Doric Anapestos?.
Doric anapestos usually acompanies the entrance of the Chorus in the Tragic plays. Its roots are in the militry music because to the ancients battle was "The Dance of Death"!
Kind regards

Thanks for sharing these new recordings. It's a shame that more original information about their music has not survived...

'Stairway to Heaven' could be played on that organ....accompanied by kithara, pipes, bells and Tympanum and the ancient equivalent of Robert Plant

I'm just listening to recordings of the Aeolian Harp....haunting music that has such an ancient feel and played by nature....
Orpheus was said to have used them.....

and a forerunner of Jimi Hendrix aka Timotheus the aulos player, imitated a storm, the screams of a woman in labour and the sounds of Scylla...!

there are some links to reconstructed music at the bottom...including Daemonia Nymphe
Listen to Mesomedes..Hymn to Nemesis on here.....sounds like something you hear on a Wurlitzer...or the hydraulis organ! [url:9zq14ras]http://www.oeaw.ac.at/kal/agm/index.htm[/url]

Salvete omnes!
Tobias said I had to post here during a lot of discussion about that theme...
it is really tricky and there is a lot of misunderstanding and misinformationen (people are only writing what they raed in other people´s books without knowing, if its rights...same with CDs sadly).
1.) Ok, Dr.SHagels recontructions of the Homers singing are basically right,
I know him personally and raed all the stuff he wrote about it.
2.) NEVER any form of a double-flute existed, they were all pipes!
So you might choose how authetic tsome groups are...their CDs have several other misleadings. Also I must agree its creative and wired and nice to listen to...but do not take it too serious.
Furthermore I find the music boring, sounds all the same and the players are not very creative with tunes and rhythms.
Exept Mr.Marshall, he was a crack of a piper!
And I love Daemonia Nymphe!
3.) The Delphi-Paian sounds like monks because we know that it was sung by the Tecnitoi (Athenian civilists chorus) of 39 men, it owns a straight 5/8 rhytmn and was accompained by kithara and aulos. The tuning is ancient and it doesen´t hit a modern ear, cause ancient tonality was not Dur and Moll rather than well-temperated-tuned...
4.) The Michigan sounds jazzy, cause the ancient tonalities are close to the modern Jazz-scales. Also the Aulos was the father of the hobo, the clarinet, the schalmei and the bagpipe.
Rebuilded Auloi sound sometimes more like bagpipes, sometimes more like a duduk (played in Armenia). We have aroung 80 archaeological founds of Auloi, all pipes, no flutes and if you recreate them you come to very complicate instruments, tricky to play. Sadly most CDs simply are played with modern nothern-african or italian folk-music-instruments.
5.) Beside knowing about 65 musical pieces of antiquity, dating from 3th BC to 5th AD, we have a lot of theoretical lecture about scales, rhythm, tonality, instruments etc.
So if you have some more questions feel free to post, I really like to answer them the best I can ;-) )
Nice forum and poeple I must say after reading a lot of postings here.
Have a nice day,
Sincerly

Salve Susanna! I was wondering if you are Susanna Ruhling with the CD and dance website? We'd be pleased to know more about you; you and I may have exchanged emails a while back.
