Music of Ancient Rome and Greece
Wow! Long time since the last post in this thread... And I have a good news - new Ancient Greek music release. Well, not so new, but...
September issue of Greek edition of well known journal "Geo" was devoted to Ancient Greek music. This issue was released with supplement - CD "Melos Arxaion".
Look here - scroll down the page - maybe later somebody who knows the language could give us more detailed information about how to order this issue: http://www.geo-magazine.gr/index.php?id=903
CD is in DVD box with Cycladic lyre player on the cover.
Performer is credited as Petros Tampouris but look here - if you would Google this name - Greek Studio-52 online shop gives you information that - Alternate Spelling/Writing of Artist Name: PETER, TABOURIS or TAMBOURIS or TAMPOURIS -
http://www.google.ru/search?sourceid=na ... +Tampouris
So we have new compilation by Petros Tabouris. His CDs you could check out here:
http://www.studio52.gr/english/TABOURIS_PETROS.htm
As to "Melos Arxaion" CD by Geo (running time - 47.06) - it consits of two parts - the first part is authentic Ancient Greek music (mainly the same as on CD by Atrium Musicae De Madrid, but mainly in very different versions) - with male and female singers - and the second - melodies written by Petros Tabouris to demonstrate sound of Ancient Greek instruments (on CD included meloies of songs created in Baraoque epoch by Benedetto Marcello and Athansius Kircher based on Ancient Greek lyrics).
There's no any booklet with this CD - so there's no information about sources etc. (probably it should be in the journal).
The main idea of this CD - to present Ancient Greek music to modern listener as easily listenable - so it seems that the melodies are heavily arranged and adjusted to modern ear. Petros Tabouris (Tampouris) and his band are playing Ancient melodies in a more faster way than Atrium Musicae De Madrid, Ensemble Kerylos by Annie Belis and my favourite Ensemble De Organographia. The first track - "Delphic Paean" even reminds music by Vangelis from "Alexander" . So music on this "Geo" CD is beautiful (and even could be listened as background music) but not quite authentic.
Good addition to your collection, but not the main source of information about how Ancient music sounded.

Looking through Susanna's distributor's site (Mondschatten) founded new CD "Pax Romana"
http://www.mondschatten.de/product_info ... omana.html
Short clip from it could be fo heard here (scroll down the page)
http://www.thegiftofmusic.com/acatalog/ ... Music.html
Obviously it is "fantasy" music played on reconstructed instruments of the 5-6 cent. AD.

I got it, cause our destributor found it in GB.

This instruments sounding...wired...modern. Also tuned modern.

The booklet does not contain any pictures (it has only one page with 4 sides) nor any more information on what, why and how...

And: it is boring like hell! One person plays one instrument (in some pieces two instruments), he obviously does not play very good technic and the pieces are not arranged in an acceptable way. All pieces are self-somposed.

I was very noisy first, but in the end it seems to be a marketing-thinnie from a museum or so...sad!

Probably Susanna would give you more satisfying answer, but it seems to me that "Mesomedos" is no more available.

Check out http://www.emmuty.de/en/index.shtml
Неre you could buy album "Symphonia Panica" by Musica Romana.
P.S. PLEASE, read the previous pages before posting - there are many useful links to CDs - in this thread you could find links to (I beleive) ALL known and available records of Ancient world music.

No, the album Mesomedes does not contain any music from or for hydraulis, the album Pugnate will, but it is still in production.

It is recorded...I am writing on the booklet etc.

You cannot download it, because we do not want to be downloaded!
There are sites that offer our album "Symphonia Panica" for download, but they are stealers and we never gave our agreement to that. Please do not download it and give this ..... people your money. I can send our CDs via postal service worldwide, even if it costs me money, before I offer others to steal art and thoughts.

I work as fast as possible...

and this document about Roman-Chinese interaction, posted by Jona Lendering

There's interesting information about musicians from Roman Syria, which performed in the court of Chinese Emperor.
