Are nubians from Numidia?

I've read that the "auxillaires" fighting with the roman troups were essentially syrian, "Palmyre".

I think Nubians come from Sudan. Numidians are said to be north-Afriacan.
Kind regards

Did the Nubians provide light horsemen? The Numidians certainly did, and they would generally look very much like the illustration.

The Nubians did (much earlier, I know!) supply bowmen to Pharonic Egypt, and the Nubians retained a warlike reputation up into the late 19th century in the war in the Sudan against the Mahdi. I hadn't heard that they were known as horsemen, though.

Nubians and Numidians were two entirely different peoples. Nubians came from south of Egypt, usually brought down the river as slaves. In fact, true Nubians were probably rarely seen as slaves, they were usually the raiders who went deeper into the African interior and traded their captives in Ethiopia and Egypt. Nonetheless, Romans tended to lump all black, sub-Saharan Africans together as "Nubians." The Numidians were a North African people, caucasoid in ethnicity although probably relatively dark. They were probably the ancestors of the modern Berber people. They were semi-nomadic and were famous horsemen. Juba, Jugurtha and Massinissa were all Numidian kings and the Romans usually tried to keep one of their puppets on the throne of Numidia, since the kingdom was strategically located and provided valuable auxilia.

That would make them fair-haired rather more than dark.

I recognised the name Juba....Cleopatra Selene (daughter of Marcus Anthony and Cleopatra) married King Juba II who was a Numidian king who later became ruler of Mauretania.

The face shape is Caucasian and reminiscant of the Greeks his mother is unknown, possibly Egyptian?. Juba's father Juba I [url:26i1dqh6]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Juba_i.jpg has a mass of corkscrew curls, (although there are Kings of England with similar hair - the awful 'Longshanks' [url:26i1dqh6]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Edw1.JPG and his son [url:26i1dqh6]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Edward2.JPG who look to have modelled themselves on Juba....lol)

The enemy is less likely to get wind of an advance of cavalry, if the orders for march were passed from mouth to mouth rather than announced by voice of herald, or public notice. Xenophon
