Beautifuller and beautifuller, Caius Tarquitius.

Were 3rd century shield decorations likely to be identical for all shields in a legion or cohort, or was there a base design that individual legionaries modified according to taste, religion, etc?

I think for the shield, that like for every other object, there was no uniformity of items in the Roman Army, only a similarity of functionality. As also the Dura shields might suggest, Roman shields were not as uniform as we might always think. Taste, Religion etc. are quite possible influences.

Here new pics. Smile

How cleanly do the lighter pigments go over the blue, or do you have to do them in multiple coats?

Thanks for the flowers! Big Grin

The paint ususally is done with one coat, only if the paint is very thin (too much water added), two or three coats might be needed.

Ave, Caius Tarquitius.

What are you going to use to edge the scutum? I have read that 3rd century scuta were edged in rawhide. Is this correct? Is there any evidence that metal was used?

Rawhide

Yes.

None that I am aware of. Rawhide is better, anyway. Big Grin

Sorry for my brief answers, but I do not have so much time at the moment...
