Reenactment
#1
Hello all, I've always thought it would be fun to be in a Roman unit reenactment group. I was wondering if there are any in MA. I know there is a WWII German group, which I hope to join in a few years. But Romans I have not seen  . Also, how much money would be put into the equipment, gear, weaponry, etc.?

Ave, and welcome to the madness! I think there are 2 or 3 Roman groups up in your general area, check my own Legio XX Links page:

http://www.larp.com/legioxx/groups.html

The overall cost is going to vary dramatically depending on how much equipment you are able to make yourself, what quality you want in the items you buy, the requirements or prohibitions of the group(s) you join, etc. But it's a good idea to assume that you'll be spending a thousand bucks at least for the basics. (Some guys spend more than that on just a helmet!) Probably you won't have to spend that all at once, since it's pretty standard to take a year or so to get fully equipped. Most groups can loan you what you need in the meantime.

Good luck and have fun! Vale,

There is the group I'm with, Legio III Cyrenaica ( www.legioiiicyrenaica.org ) that has members all over New England. You could say our "headquarters" is Massachusetts. We cover Vespasian era (60-70 AD) but also cover other periods.

There is also Leg. III Italica Concors ( http://www.legioiiiitalica.org/legio_ii ... ca_001.htm ) Located in the central CT area. These guys primarily cover Aurelius' period (160+ AD)

And of course, Legio XXIV Media Atlantia ( www.legionxxiv.org ), although they encompass the PA and NY area, but have some members all over the northeast as well.

We in Leg. III Cyr try to build our own gear, and try to upgrade/modify other gear (like some of the Deepeeka equipment, esspecially to customize the sizes). I would say you can expect to pay $300 or more for "essential" gear, but it does indeed vary considerably.

Matthew, I completely understand the madness! I went to my first Roman reenactment in "04"(Roman Days Northeast)-I was hooked from that moment on. Since then, I have been searching the net looking for the best authentic equipment. I wondering who you feel makes the best equipment?

Ave,
Hey not for nothing but I live in CT. I run a roman legion boot camp for all the various kids in our family and I have been amassing various roman gear and have all the basic stuff (mostly through La Wren's nest) though I'm sure there are some discrepancies. When do you guys get together? Do you go on road marches and what not?

Carlos,
Are you currently enlisted in any local reenactment group?

For any who care, I live in Southington, CT (southern Hartford County), just north of Meriden/Cheshire. I am currently Optio in Legio III Cyrenaica. I also participate in Legion XXIV activities and was first part of it, since I am more than willing to travel long distances for my Roman legionary activities. My birth sign is Gemini, so what do you expect? However, I am very much enjoying participating in a legion closer to home. My primary legionary impression is Augustan through Claudian (the first half of the first century AD).

Legio III Cyrenaica is still firming up our schedule. Unfortunately, for this year at least, the 2 "all Roman" events in New England that we were doing will not be happening due to circumstances beyond our control. One of them, Roman Days Northeast, was in Connecticut.
However, we will be at a couple multi-period time-line events in the NE. One in Wilmington, Vermont for the first weekend of July (6/30, 7/1 and 7/2) with the Living History Association and hosted by the Town of Wilmington Chamber of Commerce. We will be part of a Military time-line in Webster, Massachusetts the last weekend of August.
Several of us will also be at Roman Days in Maryland, first weekend in June. I will be at all of these.
We also plan, I think, to march once again in the Worcester, MA Columbus Day parade. We were a HIT last year with the parade organizers, the public and the TV news cameras. There may be more.
We have members as far west as the lower Hudson River valley area in New York State, and as far north as Maine. See the remarks of Dudicus above, he's also a member of Legio III Cyrenaica.
Send me a message and maybe us Connecticut Roman Army types can meet over coffee or dinner sometime.
