Alexander\'s Greek Allies
#1
Greetings,

How would Alexander's Greek allies have equipped themselves ?

Would there be some wearing traditional Hoplite kit ? (at least the ones who weren't from Corinth or Thebes)

Or would they all have been outfitted as Phalangites ?

They would have been equipped as hoplites Hoplites. Philip’s infantry did not render the hoplite obsolete as Issus and the Lamian War demonstrated.

I doubt Alexander had any Allies from Thebes, however, since he wiped it off the map. I would tend to think states/polis like Elis, Argos, Thessaly, and Messenia would make better candidates for allies of Alexander.

Hi, conon394.

So, they were superseded by Phalangites yet they were not quite yet obsolete ? When do Hoplites disappear ?

As VDH says, "no one's killed more Greeks than Alexander"

They might have statrted as peltasts or even ekdromoi.
Greece was loaded with that type of mercenary after so many civil wars.
It is not unlikely that Alex requiped a great number as hoplites.
After Granikus he had alot of resources at his disposal
South Greekight horse is even mentioned.
Kind regards
