Roman Field Fortifications
#1
Hail Romans,

At the end of this semester Im going to be writing a paper based mainly on Legionairies and their lives, including everything besides the combat. Kinda odd, I realize, but originality counts.

Now, Ive found research on the day in the life of these men and who they were and what they carried on them and all that handy stuff but what they did to defend themselves while camped at night has eluded me.

I was hoping to make this a focul point for my paper. It hints on all of a Roman's army's qualities: discipline, ingenuity, landscapers (lol), more discipline, etc...
Basically im looking for any information on the interior of their camps and how they are set up, defenses, watches, prepartion and clean up. All of that good stuff. Anything that hints to how they operated during camp.

Any links with pictures/diagrams (I like pictures) would be very helpful, but I would appreciate personal opinions and viewpoints and discussion.

Im sorry if this was all discussed back in the day, very new here (dont even know how to get my sig to come up), but when I ran a search there were hundreds of links and none seemed to concentrate on what im looking for. Also if you would like to add some specific anicdote which you think may not be common knowledge about anything mentioned, as well as the stuff in the first paragraph is also welcomed immensly.

Thanks.

I would suggest book's by Perter Connelly, on the Roman Fort and on the Legionary. He has a few more work's also that I haven't read that may be helpful.. G.R. Watson the Roman Soldier is also pretty good and I think if memory serves me right goes into a bit of the daily life and camp life as well.

Caesar's own writings on his Conquest of Gaul area also helpful.

Osprey publishing has a series of books that may prove useful, I just ordered a few and I can let you know in about a week if there is anything good in them.

Cheers!!

Thank you, that would do quite nicely.

Ive read a bit of Caesar's writings, and know a little about their camps.

The tent layout, latrines, palisades, trenches, all that good stuff.

Ill check out those books too, money is tight, but maybe the library has them. Tongue
