One of the best things about McBride is the amount of character he puts into his scenes - those soldiers look genuinely exhausted, having fought all the way up the hill. The centurion is, I guess, calling to the cavalry to pursue the fugitives, although the horsemen themselves look to have had an easier time of things - he could just as well be making a rude gesture at them - "Where were you ten minutes ago??"
