Fascinating Conal.

Reminds me of a D-Day/Normandy veteran I spoke to, who said that the equipment they'd been issued was rubbish, and within weeks him and his mates were wearing captured enemy boots and civilian coats.

And a mate of mine who served in Kosovo said that many of his company ditched items of their kit before leaving for the zone and spent their own money in camping and survival shops... he joked that you could spot the SAS because they were the ones wearing Gucci gear at the airbases!!!

I think the only down-side on forums is that we cannot hear each other's tone of voice on here).

I was also being light-hearted (joking) but then I sort of led myself into a 'what if' scenario, fed by Conal's interesting input about the 7th Cavalry.

That's the real upside of this forum... such diverse conversation leads one into some fascinating trains of thought...

...normally I'm stuck on the plaform :? .
