Hmmm. Who's paying these taxes then? Rome and Italy were exempt from direct taxation since 167 BC.
What about good old-fashioned Roman displays of power?

Could well be. It was another letter from J. Robert Wagner Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, US. I'll make sure I check the top of the page from now on :wink:

I agree. That's why I like being an Art Historian. We don't try to second guess these things. Any fabulous object has an inherent reason to exist...it's fabulous. duh.
