Roman Ghost Stories?

yes, the Romans in York are supposedly auxiliaries, as they carried round shields.
The last sighting was by a female, either a historian or archaeologist, I think it was. She described them as 'being in the wall' (which I presume was like watching a movie or hologram) at first and fainter than the last sighting. Her description also varied from Harry Martindale's...I found this -
Seven years later a pair of archaeologists working in the same cellar experienced an identical apparition. But this time there was an additional piece of historical information against which to measure the story, information that Harry could not have known, because nobody knew at the time. Between the two sightings, it had been established that when the 6th Roman Legion was moved out of York during the 4th Century, it had been supplemented by auxiliary troops who carried "ROUND SHIELDS". As for the reason why the auxiliaries were seen apparently thigh-deep in the floor, this was no doubt due to the fact that they were walking on the surface of the roman road that was buried two feet below the present ground level.
One sighting mentioned leather helmets, another shiny helmets. One sighting mentioned more horses being ridden and soldiers slumped over the necks. It sounded like a somewhat different viewing.
One of the sightings mentioned the Romans as wearing 'leather aprons' too.

(I mentioned the story of the Roman barring the way, on my trip to the cellar ...l ol)
The cellar floor has now been removed so the guide actually stands on the original Roman level, I believe. I think the idea is to see from head to toe next time......! All the time down there I was feeling strange, looking behind me and hoping to hear a 'trumpet' ....!
There still seems to be some confusion as to exactly when these guys originally lived or were based in York.

Totally amazing I hear that they were described as the material of their tunics was a form ofplaid??What did you do when the guy appeared barring your way?? Flavia
