You give validity to the fragmanetation argument.
Neolithic, early bronze age troops must had serious problems.
Later era psiloi and horses might have the same problem too.
I suspect that a similar missle impacting on a hoplite shield might have similar effect as on the river rock that you mentioned.
Professor Theoharris mentioned that in Sesklo were found "egg shaped" stones slightly smaler than yours but with a clay cover.
He suspected that this added to the "frag" effect. He mentioned of a roman technic of covering with clay the catapult missles.
