Building the mobile castra defenses
#1
Our group (Cohors III Praetoria), together with other two italian groups

(Legio XXX Ulpia Victrix and Cohors I Praetoria) did a three-day session of
experiments to test some specific matters about the roman military
life. One of the main test we attempted is the reconstruction of the
defenses of a one-night camp in order to understand not only techniques,
but overall realization time, how many men were required for each metre of
dig, etc.
Other experiments we did were about the scutum carriage, a fully
equipped march on a difficult mountain trail, the problem of the lamps
during the night, the duty guard for each vigilia in the night and many
others castra's various troubles.
We had a lot of fun of course, but also many problems and at the end of
the three days we were simply exhausted.
Here are some pictures: hoping to share a bit of fun with you!

Bon giorno!

A good work!

Will you make public the experiments? Where? It will be a very interesting thing and helpful for bot re-enactors and archaeologists.

Well, we have some more, but unfortunately the post doesn't accept pictures bigger than 500*600 pixels.
We also wrote a report about this experience.
I hope we can post it as soon as possible.

I feel more and more like an armchair re-enactor!

It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

Ciao Luca
from the photos it seems you guys aren't wearing any "subarmalis".
I was told that segmentata can be quite annoying. True?

Finally tonight- a Gaul caught in siege trap at Alesia - we knocked it up for the filming... the other side of the leg was too messy to show (compound fracture and all- yuk)

Goffredo,

I don't know if there is a rule for the subarmalis. I think that anyone arranges it as he wants. Personally I use always it: http://www.romanhideout.com/legiov/fabr ... lis_it.asp

Basically all the pics portray red tunics, that means guys from the Legio XXX group. White dressed pretorians where at work on the other side of the dig, the one that was not completed.

For the lorica segmentata, I can confirm that it is absolutely comfortable. We stated this in the italian report.

ciao!
Luca
