Greetings,
it says they were bearers of the Hallstatt Culture across Europe..which developed into the warrior based La Tene culture in 500BC. when the rich chiefdoms of the Hallstatt D. Hillforts all over Central Europe were abandoned, and rich burials ceased.
The bottom guy looks to be wearing a Celtic helm with the typical Illyrian thick crest...similar to the guy on the right in this first photograph... http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/skyelander/celts5.html
The Illyrian person I have been interested in for a while is called Medaurus, the protector of Rhizon or Risan, a warrior who rode on horseback carrying a lance (or kontus is my theory.... Big Grin )
Lucius Artorius Castus's memorial is North along the coast in Podstrana and you all know about Arthur and Mordred or Medraut....
regards
Arthes

Dionusios of Syrakusae had at 385 B.C. sent the Illyrians 500 Greek "panopliae" (armor?) as aid against the Molosoi. Some people say that this meant 500 Illyrian hoplites but I doubt it.

a link from Rome-total war that might be usefull though they made some shields too big (i think ) and missed adding the small metal shield from the museum.

Quote:they were of definetely celtic descent
Celtic is either a language or a denotion of cultural expression. I.e., one speaks a Celtic language or one finds goods that represent a 'Celtic' style, right? So, you can't really speak of being of Celtic descent in regard to ancient peoples, can you? I mean, for a modern person from wales or Brittany I think you could say it that way, but not of an Illyrian.

On the basis of the artistic evidence that you present, I'd say that both imagis indeed show evidence of a common origin.
However, who and what Illyrians really were has been the topic of such heated debates (reminiscant of modern debates of macedonian 'identity') that I won't even dare go any further than that!

it seems to me they broke away from a large group with certain similarities in we today call "Celts". Archaeology does attest to it . modern politics aside and modern descent even more aside. i agree with you. it is an issue of what a Celt is? your definition is just fine with me 'Celtic' style.
