I've been playing Legion Arena since it was first released in November last year. It is, without a doubt, the best computer game that I have ever had the good fortune to own.
I, like the previous writer, initially downloaded the Demo and was so hooked by it that I bought the full game and at £19.99 postage included, a bargain.
The full game consists of three campaigns, a tutorial or Latin campaign, the Roman campaign and the Celtic campaign. The Latin campaign is very short but it teaches you the basics. The Roman campaign begins in the early history of Rome and you are the commander of a small army, a legate, with a unit each of militia, skirmishers and scouts. You have no fame and 50 denari.
You will fight your way through 68 battles, improving the numbers, skill and equipment of your army. As you and your army gain experience so do you also gain fame and denari. The fame is your yardstick to guage your prowess. The denari pays for recruitment and equipment. The campaign ends with the conclusion of the civil war and Augustus is now the Emperor.
The Celtic campaign begins in the early history of the Celts and you are this time a Celtic general with a small army consisting of a unit each of militia, skirmishers and scouts. There are 41 battles in this campaign, in some of them you are on the other side of a number of battles from the Roman campaign. The campaign ends with you living as an exile in Britain after the Boudiccan revolt of 60 AD.
The game is extremely addictive and has a huge replay appeal. There are virtually countless variations to the number of ways that you can fight the battles. There are also many alternative recruitment, promotion and equipment paths that you might choose to take.
The game can be played at four levels of difficulty Arcade, normal, hard and very hard.
There is a small but active Forum where members can express their views and receive aid and comfort from the dedicated development team.
If you enjoy playing Roman wargames or computer games then you must try Legion Arena. I highly reccomend it. Download the demo as I and the previous writer did.
