Anyone fancy doing a monthly quiz?
#1
I take part in one on Timespinner
www.timespinner.com
fairly regularly and I think we could have a good one. The format goes like this. The questioner (I'll kick off the first one if people think doing it is a good idea) asks 2 or 3 questions every 3 days or so and receives the answers back by e-mail by the following week. At the end of the month they then hand over to the winner, who does the next month's quiz.
Sure, sounds like a great idea. Maybe could be scored on a point system per right answer and then the year's overall points leader gets a prize.
Sounds good Jenny, but who'll donate the prize, and with a yearly total, won't that leave the person doing the quiz each month at a disadvantage as they won't be able to score for the time they're doing it?

(gets his strategy of coming second each month in order to win the yearly prize sorted out right now )
No one is going to beat Sander anyway. I think that means we've volunteered him to come up with all the questions.
Richard
The idea that I had was more in line with people sending in answers, and then the answers being released after a week so that everyone has a chance to answer to a private e-mail address rather than a public board, with no precedence given to speed so that people in different time zones have a chance to play. However, it appears that some people want to play a different game.
I'll defer to the popular vote.
Veni Vidi Bibi

OK, let's think about this:

The contest cycle will be monthly. Every Friday, a new "Quiz Pro Quo" question will be posted on RAT. Contestants will email answers by midnight that Sunday to [email protected] . Anyone not submitting by the deadline will be out of the game. Answers must be correct to continue playing the following weekend.

The first week's question will be easy, successive questions getting harder and harder.

Every Monday, the results will be tallied and those who have successfully answered the question will be announced, and may continue to play the next week.

On the last Friday of the month, the ultimate question will be posed. If no one answers the question, the month's prize goes unclaimed. If more than one person answers rightly, a run-off begins: one more question, each night, until either the next Friday arrives or only one successful answerer remains. If Friday arrives without a winner, the prize goes unclaimed.

Prizes could range from RomanArmy.com t-shirts to Amazon.com gift certificates, to donated prizes such as books and re-enactment gear.

Anyone may submit questions to [email protected] . A submitter should grade his prospective question as Tiro (a first week question), Gregalis (a second week question), Veteranus (a third week question), and Evocatus (the most challenging). The actual use of the question will be up to the Quaestionarius, who will serve as the master of ceremonies for the game. Any submitted questions will not be posed until the following month's contest.

There'll be a Grand Prize for the overall Points Winner at Christmas each year. Each correctly answered round gains 5 points regardless of the difficulty of the question -- this means that while a monthly winner may get the most points for the month he wins, they may not necessarily win for the overall year. Consistency and persistance is therefore rewarded! The Grand Prize, of course, will be something really special.

Any thoughts on this? Sion, would you want to serve as the first Quaestionarius (term lasts through the Grand Prize period, renewable of course).

Cheers,
That looks like an excellent format Jenny --

I'd be happy to be the first Quaestionarius, I'll just zoom away and think up some questions.

We'll have to trust people not to enter the competition if they've submitted questions themselves though. Hang on, that means it'll be my job to check on that.....
When do you want to start?
Veni Vidi Bibi

Well, we're in the middle of the month at the moment, so to give you enough time to gather a wide variety of questions, let's start on the first Friday of next month.

Please keep excellent records (written ones) since there will be a Leader Board in points all year long. The last Friday of every month (when the monthly contest is decided), post the list of player rankings in the Quiz Pro Quo thread (which I'll start here in the Round Table).

By the way, to avoid any appearance of impropriety, RA.com Staff members may not play, but Speculatores may.

Tell your classics-loving pals about Quiz Pro Quo -- the questions will be not simply Roman military but about the ancient European world in general. This will hopefully develop into a great way to draw new members.

One caveat -- we will ask players to abide on the honor system not to use search engines. All other resources permitted so long as answers are submitted by Sunday midnight. Seem fair?

Suspected cheaters will be handed over to the judgment of the Quaestionarius, who will extract the truth by any means necessary.... <!-- OTICON START :evil <!--

It occurs to me, having read the rules again, that players who donate questions for future use will of course know the answer. Therefore, anyone who wishes to donate questions may do so, but they will be disqualified from playing until the Grand Prize is awarded.

Cheers,
