That's a very interesting angle, although the Iphikratid is only mentioned by a Roman author long after Iphikrates died as one of his many inventions, so I think this unlikely. I never read that Iphikrates was supposed to be corrupt, although he was often asked to go on military expeditions without the funds to pay for them, so he had to ask for "donations" whereever he went.
