Opinions about Deepeeka helmets?
#1
Salve again!

I have been interested in 3th century helmets for a while. It seems that Deepeeka Niederbieber helmet is a fairly accurate one compared to their other models of that particular era, at least I have one museum photo which looks quite like it (of course it has those usual flaws, but "the risk is acceptable", as late Maximus said  .

The usual problems with the Deepeeka helmets are that they are "one size, fits no one". Usually the Deepeeka helmets are too wide at least for me, leaving too much room between the cheekpieces and wearers temples.

Now to my point:
Is it possible to squeeze the helmet somehow so it would be more close-fitting? Nothing looks as silly as a too wide bucket-like helmet and those 3th century helmets seemed to be quite close-fitting. Is it also possible to squeeze the whole helmet without removing the cheekpieces (the pins in the cheekpiece-hinges can possibly be quite difficult to remove on that model).

www.drachenschmiede.de seems to be the cheapest place to order this kind of helmet, any opinions of their service?

Many thanks in advance!

There's a been a discussion on helmets, and the Deepeeka versions, from when you're talking about here:

Thanks. They have a MASSIVE selection of gear!!

Anyone recognise this? It has no description, just a (high) price - looks Gallic?:[Image: HV-ADE136_k.jpg]

Then there's this (eyebrows look soldered on): [Image: HV-ADE133_k.jpg]

Hi Jim
The first helmet looks a lot like an Agen sub type, Yes the type is Gallic. But I don't know of any with the brim joined at the side like that. Looks a bit sloppy for Gallic craftsmanship IMHO.
the second looks a bit like a Port type but Yeah I think those eyebrows are soldered. and I'm not convinced by the Shape. Ho hum still waiting for that ideal Briton/Gaulish helmet to appear.

Please see this treat for some comments on that supplier.

If you read the website well, you'll find some information this website is only for testing, and not a real shop! So they look great prices, but your stuff wouldn't arrive!

So, gonna look for another supplier of deepeeka helmets, if you want some.

Are we talking about the Drachenschmiede shop? Even if I'm not a big fan of them (my helmet took 18 weeks to arrive instead of the promised 9, and each week after week 9 they said it was already due to be posted), but they are a real shop and their webshop it a real one. I bought my helemt through their website 3 year ago. They're still in business afaik. Yes, they have cheap Deepeeka stuff.

Yeah, we're talking about drachensmiede. I know they are a real shop, but in their webshop I find this in the top of the page
"This is a demonstration online-shop, any products purchased will not be delivered nor billed. Any information seen on these products are to be treated fictional."

So I think the online shop isn't actually a "real" online shop. Other experiences are welkom. It's a good priced database....

I have checked their website over and over, but I never come across anything like such a statement. Where exactly did you find it?
Everything points to a genuine shop, which has been in existence for years.

If you click on the link called 'support site' that could be the project site.

I simple click on the item "shop" in the mainbar in the top of the page. Afther that I'll see the following page.

There I find the "

" statement.

Perhaps you can buy stuff from them, the classic way, by sending them an email telling them: I want this and that. It is possible that it is not possible to buy something via the webshop.

Anyway, I've dropped them an email and I'll see what they answer. I'll let you guys know!

I think I know the problem.
You have the link to an English text website?
The 'normal'German website has no such text wahtsoever.
This is the website I use:
[url:7caeiks3]http://www.drachenschmiede.de/start/index.html What's the url for the page in your picture?

Your text may refer just to the English text shop. It certainly does not refer to the German shop, that's OK and works fine.

The first helmet Tarbicus showed is in fact modelled on a real one. Peter Connolly illustrated it some years ago in an article questioning Robinson's typology of Imperial Gallic helmets. His drawing clearly indicated that the brow region was made as a seperate piece and then rivetted on. This is the only helmet I know of to be constructed like this, but a number of Port type helmets feature separate neckguards which have been rivetted on. If I recall correctly (I don't have Connolly's drawing to hand right now) the original helmet had a flatter top than the one in Tarb's picture, like most other Port and Agen type helmets seem to have had.

Ok, sounds like a solution, but I don't see a german shop! I've the same URL, and also a german "startseite".

[url:xda2kq0a]http://www.drachenschmiede.de/catalog/catalog/default.php is the URL of the shopbase. (In English here)
