HI
I may have the opportunity to spend several days in Nuremberg this December, and aside from the great museums in said city I was hoping to squeeze in one or two day trips. Unfortunately, Nuremberg is still in deep Barbaricum, but I guess Regensburg is within day trip distance by rail. Can anyone point me to other places in the area that would be worth going to for their Roman content?
Thanks

Hi Carlton,
Weissenburg is still in Frankonia - nice excavations.
Regensburg is about one hour by train from Nuremberg, and you reach the History museum with a nice Roman department within 15 minutes of walking (plus there are remnants of the legionary fortress).
Straubing is about 20 minutes from Regensburg by Train, and the (small) museum has a nice display of cavalry sports masks (for riders and horses).
The distance to Augsburg is higher, but they a few real goodies in their Roman museum.

If you can rent a car, you may like the Limes Museum at Aalen, which is about an hour away: [url:188wwxcb]http://www.livius.org/a/germany/aalen/aalen.html. Close by is the open air museum of [url:188wwxcb]http://www.livius.org/a/germany/rainau/rainau.html.

Hi Volker,
in addition to Flavius' remarks I can highly recommend Weißenburg to You, I've been there in 2002. Standing at the reconstructed North gate of the castrum Biriciana was a great impression, the whole area of the castrum is not covered by modern buildings. Also there are two further places of interest - the Roman baths and the museum. You can find there several military items, for example the famous beautiful helmet of Theilenhofen, some face mask helmets, the Weißenburg treasure, a folding chair - have a look at this site:
