Late Roman event at Archeon/NL, July 27th/3th 2006
#16
Oh malheureusement no I always search the integral Syrianus Magister's text...

I can send you an (french) article study to "modeles de combattants et technologie militaire dans le Strategikon de Maurice" by Gilbert Dagron in Michel Kazanski (late times French specialist) colloque 2005...

Have you the second wheeler article on the roman army in "phalanx"?

I come back to the Archeon topic: Archeon event is our primary objectif and we work to offers the better demonstration possible because it is the only great late roman and times event in continental Europe...

Bavay this years don't call late roman reenactor. Perhaps 2007 will be an late roman event special. But I wait confirmation.

I wait the debate on synaspismos and pyknosis with plasure...

A bientôt.
Paulus Claudius Damianus Marcellinus / Damien Deryckère.

Vale fellow Late Romans,
I need the following information!

First, may I urge all of you who have not contacted or not succeeded in contacting Jack Veldman, to please do so? A good tip would be to call after 17.00 hrs, for he can be reached (possibly even better) at home or at least after normal working hours. Archeon’s general number is normally patched through to his phone when he leaves for home. Don’t worry, he has no problem with working late.

As I said before, he can offer limited travelling expenses, but food will be free as will be staying inside the Roman buildings for the whole event.
Please keep me up to date about success as well as failures, I need to be informed.

• I would like to receive a definitive list of group members who will come to Archeon. Last year we had 70 folks joining us, this year we may have far more, which I’m not sure we can manage.

• Second, might I ask all of you to send me on short notice
1. a list with the names of all members of your group who at this moment intend to come?
2. If possible also their age,
3. their group role,
4. their equipment (best keep it general, I don’t need to hear about shoes or purses of course!) so I know how many soldiers/civilians we may have.

Those who are no members of a group or come alone, will you do the same?
Those of you who are coming without any other group members, should you want to be added to any particular group or would you like to be brigaded with Fectio? (We do have surplus shields, although they are flat...).

• I would like to hear some details about what you, as a group, would like to show or do at the event. Tell me about changes to your show elements, material you’ll be bringing. Tell me also about ideas that you may have about integrating other groups in your show, active or passive. For example, some groups might play ‘enemy’ fulcum.

• Also, I’d like for you to write down elements of shows you would like to do, say drill, individual fighting, chariot racing, Mithraic initiation rituals or anything else you can think of and which you would like to have included in the agenda. After inventorying we’ll get back later in the year to stamp out a solid event.

I also had no reaction to these questions. A negative reply is also a reply:

• Plumbatae throwing is a pet idea of mine, I’d like to hear some ideas about how we can include more groups into one plumbatae event. Maybe some want to be at the receiving end?
• Also, there is the possibility to buy wooden ‘mock’ plumbatae for a good price wholesale. Read more here: http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/viewtopic.php?t=7953 . If any group is interested, please let me know soon. I can’t afford to buy a 100 myself to distribute among the groups….

Program info repeated from the last letter:

• We have agreed with Archeon to make some alterations to our program, which you will remember was quite busy last time! Therefore we’ll start later each day, and we can change the program for each day as well. That means we can do one or two smaller elements (such as the ‘fashion show’) in combination with an alternating big element (say the drill for all groups, or the fight). The second day way can change these elements again. That way, we’ll have a different program each day, allowing each group can have one day off to rest or do some tourist activities. This also makes it unnecessary to arrive a full day ahead of schedule. The first day is Thursday 27th, so first arrivals need not be before Wednesday 26th in the afternoon. The best arrival time is still around 1700 so you can join in for dinner. Of course you can still arrive a full day ahead if you want, but I can’t guarantee that a member of Fectio will be there to welcome you!

• Sleeping arrangements are a bit different for this year. The Domus (where most of you stayed last year) should be free again. We have also secured the promise that the whole of the Inn is now available (last year the main room upstairs was in use by a Polish group), but that means that whoever wants to sleep there needs to bring inflatable beds I’m afraid. The Bath house is promised to the Minervii, and as last year that means that during the day, the place needs to be cleaned up because it is freely accessible to the public. We still encourage all who have tents to bring them and sleep there, of course.

Also, the Yahoo discussion group that exists exclusively for this event, is still running: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fectiosforum/
So if you’re interested to comment and you wish others to comment on that, please join (and it will absolutely help organising the event). I will send all those who are interested a Yahoo-invitation to become a member.
Discussion is free between members, so not all communication needs to go through me.
This forum is for members only, no sense in allowing outsiders to lurk.

Maybe you could take another picture of me, to replace the hopelessly outdated one you took of me 3 years ago? Big Grin

That means that I need my camera - and my friend Marco now has it, because he is currently in Florence with his girlfriend. Why don't you just send me another photo?

Marrit turned 9 last March. I'll be bringing her and her brother (5) along on Sunday.
