Does any one have a good idea when and where the Romans used square holes rather than round holes?

i've seem pics of roman scales with square holes. look in "the armour of impeial rome", page 155, plate 436 to see them.

a square punch is simpler to make than a round one so that might be one reason?
In my experience though square holes are pron to tearing a littl emore easily though if the holes are supporting weight or a moving piece.

Motise and tennon joinery uses square and rectangular holes- and the Romans did use these methods in wood construction
