Early Republic/Italian
#1
I'd love to put together an early republic/italian panoply like some of the guys portrayed in this picture. You don't see much interest in this period.

If you can afford some of this stuff, Manning Imperial have a Samnite scuare armor, and 2 version Apulo-corintian helmet, but he called them italo-corintian, plus he have republican scutum too.. www.manningimperial.com

But Armillum have the rep. scutum at reasonable price www.armillum.com

Kind regards!

Wow those are the first Apullo-corinthian helmets I've ever seen for sale. they're beautiful! I guess it would be expensive - but I guess it would just take some time. Big Grin

Thanks for the website, I never noticed the Armillum site before.

I wonder if there is any other manufacturers who make comparable items? If anyone sees anything let me know. Thanks.

Avete!

Deepeeka is the only place making "off the shelf" stuff right now, and I'm not sure which of their early-era pieces are usable. They did improve their triple-disc pectoral a lot! Their Attic helmet could be better, but could be worse. Their newest Montefortino looks great in the pictures but turns out to be HUGE. Nice fit if you're Goliath.

Hadn't seen Armillum before! They've got a lot of Deepeeka stuff, but also some stuff which looks much better! I like their Republican scutum, and most of their belt parts look great (except that pugio frog, hmm...). (Deepeeka's belts range from "not good" to "doo-doo".) Still mostly Imperial era gear, of course.

You'll probably end up having most of your stuff custom made, by Manning (he's great!) or someone else. There just isn't any place mass-producing any of it.

Where's Danno the Samnite? He's working on the same kind of impression (though last time he turned out he borrowed some of MY gear!). A couple of us in Legio XX have some Republican Roman gear, but I need to get better photos of it all. Some is on our Photos page or Roman Days page:

Best of luck! Fascinating era. Keep the questions coming!

Hi Brison & Mattew Big Grin

I saw a Samnite gear in a post last year by TITUS SABATINUS AQUILIUS,
Videoclips from Ostia...

But in the lower link he post all roman uniforms, where appear a Samnite
Suit Confusedhock: ...

I wonder if Sabatinus or Dan P. can tell us were to get that beateful Samnite tunic, I wonder if was home made or some supplier have it?

Also in Dan P. book appears some Samnite reenactors with Crested Attic Helmet and bronze or brass cuirass & round rep. scutums... He!

I remember reading a long time ago why the Samnites had those triple disc cuirass, but now I can't remember? Does anyone have any thoughts on that?

And I am wondering about the Deepeeka Argos Bell Muscle Cuirass? Has anyone seen it and know anyone who sells it? It kinda of reminds me of a picture I saw of the Samites watching the Romans pass under the yoke when they had defeated them.
