Buy just a single chapter, not the whole book
#1
This is an interesting new concept: buy just the chapter you're interested in from a book, rather than the whole thing. This could mean creating a virtual book; for example: from books covering a long period of time, cull just the chapter on, eg, 1st century, and assemble a custom book of multiple authors on one topic.

Thoughts from our publishing authors out there?

NEW YORK (Reuters) - On-line book store Amazon.com,, in what could be a literary equivalent of snacking, is now selling short stories, and even alternate chapters or single scenes from novels, for 49 cents each.

"Amazon Shorts," on sale from Monday, have no printed editions and are only delivered digitally.

"Amazon Shorts will help authors find new readers and help readers find and discover authors they'll love," said Steve Kessel, Amazon.com's vice president of digital media. "We hope that by making short-form literature widely and easily available, Amazon.com can help to fuel a revival of this kind of work."

It's a great idea, and resembles the samples you can play on Itunes before you purchase. Almost like flicking through the pages in a bookshop. Unfortunately, it's like having to pay 49 cents into a slot below the book you want to check out first.

As it applies only to novels it's not much use for pinpointing that piece of reference you want.

Cheers.

True, just novels now, but if you put in a word to Amazon, maybe they'll head that way.
