Wine
#16
Hi,

Quote:I read later (an a very good website, edited by an academic - no bookmark!) that the wine is very good a real authentic wine.

I would strongly doubt any claims on authenticity for wines - how could you ascertain that a given sort of grape actually is the same as 2000 years ago and that the taste of wine made from it is anywhere near what it was then?

I hope you diluted it with 50% water (at least or better more than that) to keep with ancient standards :-) )

cheers,

Martin

Greetings,all. Happy New Year.
Sorry I've been away for a couple of weeks
and am trying to catch up.

Drusus, have you considered making your
own wine? It's relatively simple, uses very few ingredients,
and would probably be closer than any commercially
produced wines.
Just a thought. Smile

I don't want to derail this thread, but I couldn't hope to make wine, but beer I could do. Has anyone ever seen any Roman/Celtic beer recipes??

The Last Legionary
This book details the lives of Late Roman legionaries garrisoned in Britain in 400AD. It covers everything from battle to rations, camp duties to clothing.

http://alacarte.de/welcome/weintipp/ita ... lerner.htm
it is a German link, but it shouldn´t be that difficult for those not firm on German.
Don´t want anyone sitting high and dry!

Ave.
There's a recipe for beer(actually Saxon ale)
on Regia Anglorum's site(Regia.org) dating from around 1200
that gives ingredients and is a bit simpler than
most home-brewing recipes.It doesn't require any
scientific equipment and sounds pretty good.

BTW-I made some homemade wine as a teen-ager
just to try it. Much simpler than beer to make.
fruit,sugar, water and a large container.Maybe
one or two others but very easy.
Not as instant as the Saxon ale but no
longer wait than beer production. Smile
