Iron Scutum Umbones
#1
Avete omnes,

Now most of us have a steel umbo on our scuta, but I honestly can't recall having seen an actual artifact that is made of iron- can anyone point me toward information about any? I'm particularly interested in the thickness.

Vale

Ave!

Bishop & Coulston mentions 3 iron scutum bosses found at Carnuntum, and shows one of them. There are 3 iron bosses in the Vindonissa catalog, but they all have circular flanges. Unfortunately, no thicknesses are given in either case! The cross-sections shown in the Vindonissa catalog suggest the 14 to 16-ga range, but that's just a guess.

I think Connolly shows a couple iron scutum bosses, too, including one with a hexagonal base apparently for a curve-sided scutum. But he rarely gives many details.

Vale,

14 gauge. At last year's Nashville roman film shoot they had us line up in two lines facing each other. We bashed shields and the result was many smashed sctum bosses. Most of these were thin Deepeekas. Mine was made by Mark Morrow from 14 gauge steel. It came away with only a tiny, barely precievable, dent.
