Making a spatha bone pommel and hand guard

Hi,

I am thinking of making a bone pommel and hand guard for my Deepeeka spatha (hilt already bone).

What part of the bone is best- eg a cow's hip bone?

Any other tips?

If you are thinking in the egg-shaped pommel of Koln Spatha, i think is made of ivory (elefant tusk?).

There is not any bone with that kind of shape. You have to carved, probably in 3 pieces (One cilinder and two "covers"). Is the way some imperial gladius pommels are made. You can search past posts, were they are depicted.

The main weight bearing bone of a cow or horse seems to be used historically. In the cow, the lower front leg bone is the one I use. I have several here in various stages of being cleaned. They are solid, unlike most bones, having almost no marrow.
