An error! Never! Big Grin wink:

I suppose that since this helmet has never been reconstructed before, we're all a bit at a loss how it would have looked.

Yes there is evidence. A2 is based on the mosaic from Santa Maria Maggiore, Richborough 1 although this is a very fragmentary helmet and another helmet which I am sure Robert is familiar with as it comes from his part of the world. G3 is based on one from Bulgaria and I can send you details of that via your email.

Hello Graham,

Thank you, yes, I'd be interested in having the details. I'll send a PM to you momentarily. Big Grin

Quote:An error! Never! Looks OK to me although it is at a difficult angle. I am more worried now about the brow band and cheek piece they seem to big (although the original is largely in bits, however it has until now passed scrutiny from all the leading late Roman helmet experts here on RAT and Raffaele's own eagle eye.

 Well, my intense scrutiny was motivated by a sincere desire to have a replica of this helmet made for me. And I like the little chi-ro applique on your helmet. I know where to buy perfectly sized chi-ro to attach to my own crest. Did you base it on Constantine's coinage ? I remember there was controversy about whether it does indeed show a chi-ro on his helmet / diadem.

Sorry about that. This seems to work.

And don't forget that the crest remains from Richborough are identical to those on the Intercisa IV type helmets. Even one of the Chi-Ro badges related to those helmets was recovered from Richborough.

It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

My pleasure, Theo! Big Grin
Dive into this thread, it contains the full reconstructive sequence and is full of information on the Intercisa IV type!

Thank you for the details, Graham. Laudes Big Grin

If I may ask you further questions about your reconstruction of the G3 helmet :

So, the neck guard in your reconstruction must be mail, scale, or just plain leather. It seems a bit ambiguous. Can you please explain to us what type of neck guard you thought it would be ?

Are the crest box and tube in your representation hypothetical or were additional pieces found with the original helmet to suggest their existence ?

Finally, do you happen to know the dating assigned to this helmet ? You've interpretted it to be as late as Justinianic in your caption but I'm wondering if it could be dated to an earlier reign. Usually I see wide ranges of time periods assigned to late Roman helmets.

Another thing I like about figure A2 is his boots. They appear to be descended from 1st century caligae and look so simple that even I could make them. I have all the materials but I wish I had a pattern so that I could see the backs and tops of them.

Hello Jaime

Raffaele and I will try and send you as much as we can on the helmets and boots for the figures you have expressed interest in. We are both however desperately trying to finish off our latest book for next month!

Best wishes
Graham.

Looking forward to it- any ideas on when it will be published and by who?

Cheers

Probably at least six months from completion. The publishers are Greenhills.

I'm looking forward to it too Graham!

As I have said previously, I will be buying it as soon as possible no matter what the publisher puts on the cover and will be recommending others to do the same.
