Roman reenactors becoming a Global Organization????
#16
The problem is is that no one really knows how the Roman army fought. Triple lines? single combat? shock effects? slow paces? running and throwing pila? movement by files or ranks? We dont' even have 1st century drill commands! So if you do combat, is it even done correctly?
As part of a historical display, you would have to add disclaimers that you're not sure exactly how the Romans fought, and that the simulation does not include the effects of death and discipline. So, the authenticity of combat is impossible to achieve anyway.
You can do combat training, as best it would be understood, which is where I think using Bruggemann's work would be really illustrative.
Richard Campbell, Legio XX.

Does anyone think, and maybe Dan can shed some light on this since he has had experience with these weapons....but would it be possible to "test" some of the theories on how the romans fought with the use of these swords? I know it would have to be on a large scale, but maybe this would be a great way to see what really did work. Who knows, considering that every battle offered a different tactical situation, maybe the Romans fought differently in accordance with whatever situation faced them.

Is this off topic? If so....sorry.
"The problem is is that no one really knows how the Roman army fought."

Is not completely true.
According to the research made by Dario Battaglia (www.arsdimicandi.it/) we know very few details about legionaries, but we have a big amount of infos about gladiators. The nice is that gladiators were fighting "like the legionaries".
Dario is a great expert of fencing technique for both gladiators and legionaries. I saw one of his demonstrations, some pics are here: www.romanhideout.com/Legi...lt_en.asp.
I'm going to add some animated pics to better explain some details.

His research covers only some aspects of the roman fighing, still a lot of questions have no answer, but I think Dario can help to understand.

Hoping to be helpful.

Good points Luca. Vardulli (I think it was) with the II Augusta and their gladiatorial contingent have written up their findings based on their experiences as gladiators. He sent me the link which I promptly lost, but if he's reading, perhaps a comparison of findings could be done?
Richard Campbell, Legio XX.

Friends, Romans, countrymen... lend me your ears!

Probably we can never get a group of people to agree on the ground rules for an incorporation of Roman re-enactors, although I like the "Roman Confederacy" idea, where each group sort of does it's own thing, and the central leaders attempt to mentor new groups to achieve the same general standard, sort of what Matt Amt does now.

Personalities seem to play too much into all this. But if we could get past those, I think the Confederacy would be a wonderful positive thing.

In the meantime, if you want to have RAT as your Senate, by all means, enjoy!

Cheers,
Jenny, I think you are getting closer to the idea of what some of us would like to see in this group. I hope FAMS works out! If there are those of us that do not want to be part of such a federation, then don't join. If RAT is enough for you, power to ya. However, for those of us wanting someting a little more than a discussion board, to use as a guideline regarding the formation of new units, event coordination, etc., then this Federation is a perfect idea.

It is nice that we have the resources to help us pursue out goals, like the online handbook for legionarys, or RAT, or the many other online sources. But, let's form a greater sense of family, organization and unity in this....Heck, this relationship is getting stale, I want to go past second base!!!
