Reproduction Roman leather military tents?
#61
Oiling with neatsfoot oil most certainly will turn your white goat skin brown. See the following:

and:

Both of these items I made from white goat skin.

Cry I actually have no idea, however
Big Grin I've purchased Neatsfoot oil at places that sell horse stuff, like saddles. It's used to condition leather. You just wipe it on and the leather will turn brown.

Paul,
It is impossible to tell how many panels were exactly involved in the Deurne sheet. Notwithstanding, Carol supposes that it was 4 x 4 panels, which would give an approx. 288 x 208 mm...

It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

Quote:Hi
. As you know goats leather is white ..
How to make it more in brown color ??
Oiling will make it darker but will not change into brown

Sad
Why would you want to dye it? If it comes out a light colour then that's how it should be. I doubt the Romans dyed their tents

"Neat" is an old word for calf. Neatsfoot oil is made from calve's hooves.

Indeed. if I were to include all fragments, each interspaced with one meter of air, I could 'prove' that they carried a circus tent!

Robert,
Non-matching seams can only mean missing panels and remember that there areat least two more similar and better preserved (unpublished Sad ) items examined by Carol...
