I actually have no idea, however
I've purchased Neatsfoot oil at places that sell horse stuff, like saddles. It's used to condition leather. You just wipe it on and the leather will turn brown.

Oiling will make it darker but will not change into brown

Why would you want to dye it? If it comes out a light colour then that's how it should be. I doubt the Romans dyed their tents

"Neat" is an old word for calf. Neatsfoot oil is made from calve's hooves.

Non-matching seams can only mean missing panels and remember that there areat least two more similar and better preserved (unpublished ) items examined by Carol...
