Layout of Republican permanent forts
#1
We are currently excavating imperial remains of the city of Castrum Novum (Santa Marinella) near the harbour of Centumcellae (Civitavecchia). The imperial phase of the town overlies a fort built in 264 AD as part of the Tyrrhenian shore fortifications against incursions of Carthaginians.

We are catching glimpses of the internal layout of the fort, but we are having problems in relating the layout to other roughly contemporary sites, of which there seem to be very few identified and or excavated: Ostia (much earlier) and Numantia (much later).

The Ostia fort is permanent, Numantia are siege works.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you.
