Kalkriese - The Final Clue ??
#1
Hi
I ran into news from NDR-Radio & TV.
The doctorate dissertation of Annika Diekmann (in Chemistry !) now seems to prove that the 19th Legion had been involved on the battlefield at Kalkriese.
https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/niedersac...se498.html  (as of today)
Interestingly this had already been published earlier:
https://www.westfalenspiegel.de/der-fing...des-varus/  (as of 21th of July 2022)
In short:
She tried and produced what you would call a "metallurgical fingerprint" by analyzing fine metal scraps of parts found at Kalkriese on a greater scale. ((ca. 300 pieces at Kalriese alone)
The news also stated, that she partly took british reseach of that kind as a yardstick. (No more information given on that here !)
She then took such fingerprints of a couple of battlefield and camp-site a further examples, which she compared to those from Kalkriese.
Reference samples where taken from finds at german places at Haltern (Lippe), Xanten (Rhine), Neuss (Rhine), Dangstetten (not too far from the swiss border), as well as from
Oedenburg-Biesheim (Alsace/Rhine/F) and Windisch (CH).
The units involved were divided into three groups: A) had been defeated 9 AD   B) had participated in the battle at "pontes longi" under Germanicus  C) had been stationed at the "Hochrhein" in Germany and Switzerland.
Under the assumption, that each Legion drew its equipment from the same "pool" (-- its own !), it now can be clearly seen which Legion was where.
That way, the Varian Legions can be clearly discerned from the Legions that where with Germanicus or other Legions.
The 19th Legion clearly had been at Kalkriese.

This is only a SMALL part of the press reports that keep "popping up" right now.

Very interesting, and quite ingenious research. Hopefully we'll see more about it in coming months - thanks for passing it on!

Slight update:
Thie Thesis was submitted to the "Deutsches Bergbau Museum" , Bochum. In all ca. 550 samples taken and analyzed by mass spectrometry.
