Paul Bidwell (-2022)

Segedunum Roman Fort & Museum reports the loss of Paul Bidwell:

"We are very sad to hear of the passing on 5 November of our former colleague Paul Bidwell, OBE, LLB, MA, FSA, MCIfA. Paul worked at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums for three decades, heading the Archaeology team and transforming Segedunum Roman fort. He was also the Founder and President of the Arbeia Society. Since his retirement, Paul remained active in archaeology, continuing to publish research, including a major volume on the section of Hadrian’s Wall at Wallsend, published in 2019. Aspects of his research feature in our current exhibition, Building the Wall: the whole section on the new interpretation of the water tank is taken from his book, as well as the possible appearance of the fort gate in the time of Hadrian. He generously gave us his time and advice on these points for the exhibition. Our thoughts and condolences are with his partner and family at this sad time."
