You will need forms to make closed shoes, Ennius.
Modern male forms (wooden or plastic) are designed for slightly 'heeled' shoes, unlike most ancient shoes, which were flat.
I am involved with a shoemaker in order to reconstruct Late Roman military footwear, rather far from the period you re-enact, but with many common problems!
It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.
