fell/allendale type boot
#1
Hi all,

I'm needing some help, i'm wanting to make myself a pair of enclosed boots of the fell/allendale type. I've got a copy of Carol van Driel Murrays excellent article on roman footwear in the northern provinces, and have experience making and remaking various pairs of caligae, but have yet to make myself an enclosed pair of boots. Can anyone give me any useful tips on the manufacture of these before i buy the leather? Or even any decent pictures of reconstructions. I know i've seen at least one regular member of this forum proudly strutting about in a rather fine pair.....!

Matt Amt has a single pattern on this on his website, but is that what you mean, a calceus?
I understood the CVDM was preparing a catalog of all known Roman footwear, which might have some patterns in it, whenever it's published.
Legio XX
You will need forms to make closed shoes, Ennius.
Modern male forms (wooden or plastic) are designed for slightly 'heeled' shoes, unlike most ancient shoes, which were flat.
I am involved with a shoemaker in order to reconstruct Late Roman military footwear, rather far from the period you re-enact, but with many common problems!
It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

Ennius - Vardulli made a pair this year - might be worth emailing him?

I agree; trying to make a closed shoe without a last, or a get a sandal right, is much harder. Just trying to get the angle of the Vindolanda type sandal's arch was a major pain needing three fittings to get right.
Legio XX
I see on Matts pattern there are no thoug/lace holes on the right handside of the pattern, is this a mistake or by design?

I am thinking about giving this a go as well as I am constantly singing my feet in the carpetinas I have at the moment when I use my forge.
I'm hoping Dr. Goldman is right about Carol VDM's new book; let me see if she'll answer the question.

Dear Richard Campbell and wife,
I have read the E-mail exchange between you and Elizabeth Will with great interest, and even more that you are a former student of Jane Hall, a dear and valued friend. Now I can see how your enthusiasm has its sources in very dedicated teachers.

You will find my chapter on Ancient Roman Footwear (Chapter 6) of The World of Roman Costume of great interest, and that will be the next publication of my work in reconstructions. I have been working with Carol van Driel Murry of U of Amsterdam, who is the lady working with the
real leather finds from the camps in Germany and Holland. She is also cataloging the over 3,000 leather footwear finds from Vindolanda on the Roman Wall. She and I have been working together on a book on Ancient Roman footwear, and her work is very technical. My part of the book is
with the representations of footwear in painting, sculpture, and mosaic, not nearly as accurate or technical, since I am working with works of art and not the real thing. But since I had about 10 times as much material as I was allowed to include in my chapter 6, Carol and I have decided to
do the book. But the costume pattern book will come first.
