Kids\' worst questions
#1
While doing school demos, what sort of questions have you had that you just could not answer well? This might help the rest of us prepare.
Legio XX
Lepidina, et alia,
I did not list this one under "worst" questions because when I was first quizzed, I realized this was a major moment. Since in my presentations I raise the issue of the fullonia, the uses of urine in the bleaching, dying, and fulling processes, I also refer to the bucket on the street outside the fuller's shop for male passersby to use (And the "non olit" quote from Vespasianus). The question always is asked first, if I don't go ahead and demonstrate it anyway, "How does one "contribute to the bucket" while wrapped in a toga?" I simply turn my back, having swept up the fold and simply stand still. This is the biggest laugh in the show and a favorite with audiences. By the way, a few furtive glances over the shoulder and a big finish with some bounces often produces applause. Note: I actually don't do anything; they do it all in their imaginations. But it is one of the most popular moments in my presentation.
As to group lavatory use, and or female customs, I handle that in after the presentation Q & A. If the audience is too young, I skip this part, but as always, if in doubt, I ask the teacher beforehand. (In repeat performances that the part they most want.)
