Philip A. Stadter (1936-2021)
#1
Philip A. Stadter, American classicist, has died aged 84.

A Princeton and Harvard scholar, he spent his entire working life at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he held various Professorships. He was an authority on Plutarch, and RAT members may know him from the Introductions and Notes he wrote for the Oxford World’s Classics translations of Plutarch by Robin Waterfield (Plutarch: Greek Lives, 1998 and Plutarch: Roman Lives, 1999). His book on Plutarch and his Roman Readers was published in 2015. He also wrote the standard modern treatment of Arrian, Arrian of Nicomedia, in 1980, and compiled a comprehensive concordance to the works of Arrian (sadly no longer available).
