shoe lasts

I'm having a bear of a time getting the broad central strap of a Vindolanda type sandal to fit properly. It does not want to bend in a tapering to the toe fashion. Does anyone use a last when they make these things?<br>

Also, the shanks of my cut nails are far too long..about 1/2 inch.. and deform the head into the sole. I cut it short but then the slight bend seems too easily pulled out. What sort of hobnails do you find work for you? Sources? A thinner shank would be really welcome. <p></p><i></i>
