trireme boarding actions
#1
I'm wondering how 6th- 4th century trireme using nations that favoured boarding actions pulled them off, given that it is so difficult to get on and off a trireme (usually requires a ladder on each side at the back of the ship) and if the ships were parallel to one another, there would be a mass of oars in the way.  The added weight put onto the front of the ship to make it stronger and also the weight of 40 hoplites would have made the ship more liable to be rammed by nations that favoured the use of the ram, so it must have been difficult to get the ship into position for boarding to take place.  How was it done?  Did they have some sort of boarding ramp?  I understand that they tried to ram other, lighter, ships head-on but wonder what happened next?
