Domina - mosaicist
#1
Hello all

Here are a few images of the LEG II AVG mosacist in action, Lawrence has introduced himself in the general forum but has asked for a few images to be posted here. I have had to give a link to the page on the Domina website as geocities can be a bit tetchy sometimes about doing direct links to their websites. You can reach the write up here. I did the write up which will soon be replaced by Lawrence, and I know next to nothing about them so pelase don't judge his work on my efforts!

Lawrences work goes from strength to strength and I will hopefully be getting some better pictures of his more recent work in a couple of weeks, once, I have them I will drop a notification in here.

He uses period practices and techniques for the mosaics including cutting his own tessari (sp?).

Lawrence gets on the forum here when he can so he ought to be able to answer any questions that you have but it might be a little while.

All the best.
Graham Ashford

Looks great; my congratulations to him. I'd definitely be interested in more detail. How, for example, does he transport all that stuff?

Say, is that a gladiatrix gazing on in the funny pants/shirt/shorts?

Yes that is one of the gladiators of Ludus Gladiatorius along with one of the male members as well. The building in the background is the back of our display building while we were at the British Museum.

The equipment goes in the back of his estate at the moment as I understand it.
I have seen the famous mosaic of the girls in the Roman bikinis, but this is the first time I have seen one wearing a Roman sports bra. Is the lady in the photo wearing an item of clothing I was previously unaware of? Strictly an academic question, of course.

Just you try holding a couple of grapefruits on your chest with only a horizontal strap bound around them, and then jump around a bit! I can imagine a vertical binding was quite necessary for practical purposes...
After an incident which nearly trebled audience attendance at Dover Castle with a single strap around the chest almost coming away, we let the ladies take a look at thier costumes and come up with some alternatives, this was the best compromise!

Mind you perhaps this could be a way of boosting figures.

We are currently taking a look at what is known about female underwear for the chest and seeing whether or not a more elaborate version could be used in the arena ... but not for this year.
Yes, just jump right in Jen. Say, you could always be a gladiatrix; ever thought of that?
