I have seen the leather piping shown as red and also brown ... and even metal.

what is the evidence for either colours or that it was actually leather ?

Conal, as far a I know, there is no evidence for colours. As for material, une tiny scrap of apparently leather 'piping' survives on the Deurne helmet.
