I'm in the very early stages of putting together a graphic novel dealing with ancient Rome, and have been slowly amassing tons of reference material on clothing, technology, and whatnot. While I haven't entirely nailed down exactly when it will take place, I'm thinking late Republic. Obviously, I need to depict the city in the days before Augustus left it a "city of marble," and well before Nero's fire. Unfortunately, all the illustrations and architectural sources I can find depict the Gleaming, Imperial city with all its marble grandeur and the Flavian Amphitheater towering in the background.
I can easly picture the twisted, crowded, squalid haphazzard urban sprawl of Republican Rome, but I want the architecture to be accurate. Does anyone know where I might find some reference material?
